Step One:

Step Two:

Cover said siblings face below the nose with your hand (keep your hand perpendicular to subjects face)

Step Three:

Get freaked out or the giggles because you start to see "Forehead Man!". Forehead Man is the emerging face whose nose/lips etc has been replaced by a series of wrinkles. It helps if your subject will look all the way up (which will look like down to you).

Follow these steps under extreme boredom or if on a road trip.

I thought I would do some shameless Leo blogging. Leo's favorite book: The Cat in the Hat. He (and I) pretty much have it memorized. It is slowly being replaced by the ABC book which his friend Miles introduced him to --it involves singing and the ABCs. Leo LOVES ABCs right now. He likes to point them out on tires, on shirts, on wherever, and then break into the ABC song. I love it. The best part is the large "YAAAAAY" with enthusiastic hand clapping that he follows it up with. This ritual is repeated after other songs --two favorites that he can sing: "the bitsy bitsy spider" and "twinkle twinkle blue star". He still is not the biggest eater --yesterday for dinner he had three bites of cranberry sauce. And, today two chips. He would be so happy if every meal consisted only of soy milk and fruit. There are many reasons parents would not embrace this diet and some are grosser than others. He is into imaginary things --bouncing balls eating ice cream etc. And, he is so happy to be friends with everyone. He talks to strangers (oh, wait, that's a classic one not to do). I think it's wonderful, though. If he is not motivated to go somewhere you ask him to (which is often) --he likes to race. He is, so far, fooled by this one. Sometimes we have A LOT of races. His favorite thing to do on the computer is watch panda bears on youtube. The sneezing panda is his all time favorite. Although, he does request "Charlie bit my finger" often. Leo is not into drawing or coloring, but comes home from school with really lovely art projects. We tried potty training, but it turned into a game of "how many places I can pee". He was very proud when he told me "I pee in closet!" "I pee on book shelf!" "I pee BY potty". I know this is a step in the right direction, but I might blow a gasket if we didn't put it back in the diaper and come back to it in a little while.

Sam and Cedric made an amazing meal including mis en bouche and freaking awesome fondu. Also, I have tried to adopt the apertif. Which, I'm on to you guys --it is a little drink and snack before the meal. What could be wrong with that? nothing.

This was the awesome Ice Cream Cake that is for Christmas eating. When Leo woke up late at night from jet lag/noise/sleeping on the third floor in a completely different house in a new country we gave him some. I am usually kind of a hard ass when it comes to sleeping, but I couldn't let the boy cry on Christmas as we sat downstairs and ate Ice Cream. Amazingly, he didn't wake up in the middle of every night wanting Ice Cream Cake and we were able to play poker and laugh and laugh and laugh on other nights.

We moved from our CUTE house in Windsor Park --an amazing neighborhood in East Austin to Mueller. Mueller is " The New Mixed-Use Urban Village in the Heart of Austin, Texas". It is in short, badassed. It is located where the airport used to be in Austin. The basic concept is --shared spaces, many parks/pools, mixed use spaces (these are coming soon), and much much planning and community involvement going into every decision. That part sounds exhausting and awesome at the same time. Either way we finally drank the cool-aid and moved over here. The catch is that the houses generally have zero to very tiny back yards. In the past I though that would be a HUGE bummer. However, a year into having a kid I was pretty much just stressed out by my back yard. It really turns into a heap of random really quickly left untouched. And, it's amazing how fast nature takes over with self pruning pecan trees and bird doo doo all over the place. Ah, it was nice OWNing giant trees, though. That is a bazaar concept that made me feel accomplished. So, now we live here and I have quickly loved the amenities like the gianormous bath tub that fills up with piping hot water in like three seconds. Also, it is like some sort of anti depressant to walk outside to a play scape, open field, or basket ball court sprinkled with other little kids and parents. Honestly, I thought our dog would take it the worst. But, she is eight and she really likes to sleep all day anyway. Besides, those guilt reflecting lines --I think it's better for our dog-human relations. We walk her once or twice a day --usually one long and one short. She gets much more attention that way. And, she usually gets to go to the park with us --she NEVER went to the park with us before. It's not that she's such a terrible companion, it's just that getting in the car and going to the park takes an increadable attention to detail with snacks and diapers and wipes and shoes AND socks that a dog and a leash would push me right over the edge. I can handle throwing a kid in the stroller and a dog on a leash and come back home if I need a jacket or a kleenex or a banana STAT. So, this is the place...And, we are a ten minute walk from the future "town central" which will mean grocery store, coffee shops, ???, and the Austin Children's Museum. Can't wait for that. OH! There is also a hike and bike trail two blocks away. it is awesome and has giant metal spider and rocket ship, a creek with a water fall (used for exposing our H20 to Oxygen), and really cool plants.

Afterwards...

Leo had his adenoid removed and tubes put in his ears. He rocked it. When we got there he made fast friends with other surgical patients and families. Then, he charmed the scrubs off of all of the nurses. He chatted everybody up and managed to make us really relaxed about the whole ordeal. Afterwards, he was not so happy, but, tonight he just ate ham (a first!) and two eggs (also a record). I think it will make a difference that he can actually taste his food. Also, Jim caught him practicing breathing through his nose --something he wasn't really able to do before. Of course, I forgot my camera at 5:30AM, so we had to resort to the Iphone. Which, was also helpful in keeping us occupied for the hour he was gone --scrabble.

Nuclear

I photographed Mark Deinert and Steven Biegalski at the JJ Pickle Research Campus today. It was awesome. They showed me around the Nuclear Teaching Lab where there is actually a nuclear reactor. The first photo is Deniert and Biegalski sitting in the control room of the nuclear reactor. The second is an actual photo of the nuclear reactor. It is in cased in three stories of water --very cold water. As I held my camera over to take the photo I pondered which would be more expensive -replacing the Nikon D700 and bad ass lens or fishing it out of the nuclear reactor. Then, I decided to take the rest of the photos with the camera very close to my head.

I also met a real live nerd. He was photographing his chess clock with a nutron camera. Very impressive.

They just received a half a million in grant dollars to research ways to track xenon --a gas that is released when nuclear weapons are being tested. The grant is from the US Dept. of Energy's National Security Administration. Gas can be collected while flying over places in airplanes. The gas then gets tested for Xenon. So, hopefully, it is a non invasive way for countries to keep each other honest.

This is what the house looked like when the frat boys "moved" out. They left a fifteen foot trailer worth of crap behind. Yes, we charged the for it. Yes, they (their parents) paid us for it. Our neighbor, Luanne (that has been their since the seventies) had a gracefully sothern way of calling them spoiled, "I think they might have had an entitlement problem". Indeed. She cracks me up! But, seriously, what is wrong with people? Still, by some miracle and a little (a fifteen foot trailer worth of) help from our friends --THANK YOU--we turned it into THIS

Besides being a rental property t was also my childhood home. So, we also had to clean out the attic and sort through thirty eight years of the --insert adjective of your choice and it would probably apply--past. Anyway, that was our September and some of August, a little October, and probably shaved a little off of our 2068. In the end it feels good to better a place in the neighborhood instead of selling it as a crap hole to an investor that would rent it to god knows who. Also, we probably made a little more cash taking the time to flip it, of course.

We were in way over our heads regarding the manual labor and everybody that we hired was freaking fantastic. The painter --he restored my faith in humanity and people just being good to each other (you might remember the fiasco with the Landscaping company that just counted the ways that they could take advantage of us). You are crazy if you need something painted in Austin and you don't hire him. He even does work for the Blanton. If we somehow got mixed up with shady contractors or generally crappy people on this gig we would have been the most giantest piles of goo.

I didn't mean to end this post on such a low note. Because, really, inside, we are dancing in the streets!

I took a trip to New York last year to see my friend, Kathleya and to get some much needed rest (toddler not included). On vacation my favorite way to photograph is with an older film camera w/o light meter --it is fun for me to guess at the exposure. Here are three images from the roll that I took with my Hasselblaud. Yes, it has taken me a year to send the roll to the lab and get a chance to take a look at the images.

I promised more Stitch photos so long ago. Well, here they are! This shoot was crazy crazy as I only had literally three minutes per model. Still found a few gems in the mix --most of the models were pro and of course the outfits were killer. I found these while editing recent studio work to create a portfolio for The Santa Fe Workshops! The University of Texas where I work part time is is sending me to the Contemporary B&W Portraiture class next week. I have always always always wanted to go and I feel like I have won the lottery or something getting to go. I can't wait! Although, I am sure being away from Leo and Jim for a week will definitely have it's extreme moments.

My little cousin got married in Lubbock two weeks ago. The wedding was beautiful and I had the pleasure of shooting it.

The bride's dress turned RED. It is the color of the dirt in the air --everywhere. It also smelled like poo at the end of the night --still just a windy Lubbock thing. I was checking diapers before I realized that it was just the way that the air smelled. Leo skipped the wedding and went to a pizza party. He came back the next morning saying "na na boo! boo!" I'd say the weekend was a success all round.
